Babaji's Samadhi — 1984

- OM NAMAHA SHIVAYAHAIDAKHAN NEWSLETTER

MARCH 1984

Shri Shri Mahaprabhuji, who played His divine lilas with us, has left His physical body on 14th February 1984 at about 9 a.m.

Pujya Babaji's mortal remains were buried next to the kirtan hall with His head toward Mount Kailash, to the north. The Honourable C.P.N. Singh, Governor of the State of Uttar Pradesh, attended the ceremonies and made arrangements for the construction of a pure white marble samadhi (a temple-like shelter), to be erected over the grave.

All of us now remember occasions when He had given us to understand

clearly that He would leave us very soon, yet no one really wanted to believe it.

Among other things, He said more than once to Gora Devi, His first

western disciple, that she would stay with Him for twelve years; and this is the twelfth year.

During the past days we have all experienced strong moments of an

awakening of consciousness. Everyone has suddenly become aware of the sacrifice and suffering which Babaji has taken on Himself through His physical body in order to help us.

Babaji has often been referred to as the "Yogi-Christ". Now we have been led to appreciate even more deeply the greatness of the fourteen years of His teaching, having ourselves experienced the drama of its enactment in so many different ways.

Babaji has given us His teachings, He has prepared us for the times to come, He has completed the ashram here at Haidakhan and has organised centres throughout the world. Through His work Babaji has helped us to grow and make us more mature. Lately He often used to call us His "children".

Now we have to allow that the true realisation of our lives takes

place with the help of His deep and clear teachings.

The hour after Babaji's physical heart had stopped to beat saw nature reflect this event in a most profound way; the intensity of the energy felt all around let nature, as it were, hold her breath. For some hours the birds remained silent, the wind stopped and a blanket of silence descended on the valley, followed by an uproar echoing in the hills during the time of His burial.

Some devotees witnessed natural phenomena which cannot be explained in an ordinary way : a great ball with black fire at its centre traversed the sky towards the tomb and in the atmosphere there could be felt the most intense pain at the loss of the most beloved Being, Father, Mother and God, as a great energy of light-consciousness began to manifest with increasing intensity.

The second day the sky was darkened all day long by dense mist and grey clouds, which created an apocalyptic atmostphere, reminiscent of the

- 2 -

Gospel accounts of Calvary.

On the third day, the day of the burial ceremony, when devotees from all parts of India and from all over the world were present, Shri Babaji gave us a day of brilliant sunshine. The night that followed showed the full moon surrounded by an enormous halo of intense luminosity.

Three days after the burial ceremony there started the most violent

thunderstorm with lightening and hail, unheard of at this time of year, like ominous forebodings of times to come.

Babaji, already ailing, had spoken of a "pain of a thousand knives" in His heart and of having "only one heart to bear all the pain of the world". He spoke of this with an expression of suffering on His face, while leafing through a book of photographs of the destruction of Hiroshima, which an American devotee had brought Him.

The deeper meaning of what Shri Babaji has told us in recent years

becomes more and more clear by the events of present day world history. It is evident that the times for which Babaji has prepared us have come.

This letter does not only want to be a new bulletin of future programmes, but wants to exhort devotees to become aware of the significance of these times and to continue Babaji1s work by using all our talents. "You must save yourselves and the world," Babaji has told us.

Before leaving us, Babaji has given us precise instructions and has left everything perfectly prepared, awaiting only the realisation through all of us with energy and devotion. Infinite threads are beginning to come together and already we may see the design of the divine tapestry of which we all are a part.

Babjai has asked us many times to meditate and repeat the name of the Lord. To do both at the present time is extremely important, for now that Babaji has left us physically He has entered more deeply within us, so that the contact with Him can be one of uninterrupted communion.

On the ceremony of the twelfth day after His burial, many devotees felt the "physical" presence of Babaji in the kirtan hall and experienced His darshan.

This has renewed our joy and made the atmosphere more serene.

Babaji had already arranged the weddings of two of Mahamuniraji1s sons to take place immediately after He had renounced His body. Many Western devotees experienced the wonderful hospitality on these occasions, and it was as if Babaji, during these days of mourning, had given us the opportunity to gather the signs of good fortune of a life of love among men.

In the houses of the families the atmosphere was one of sacredness and the feeling of union between Westerners and Indians was total. Here at Haidakhan, the presence of the Governor of U.P., C.P.N. Singh, a great soul and devotee of Babaji, has greatly simplified matters and has also resolved every legal question concerning the ashram.

Shri Mahamuniraji is now entrusted with the main responsibility, while Swami Fakiranandji is responsible within the ashram in Muniji's absence. Haidakhan will continue to remain the most sacred centre of pilgrimage and all the activities have been taken up again with renewed energy and a still

- 3 -

greater sense of responsibility which will ascertain the maintenance of the devotional practices and protect the intense spiritual atmosphere of this sacred place.

Mahamuniraji has given out an invitation to all devotees around the world to come to Haidakhan for Navratri, which this year will be celebrated between 2nd and 10th April. This will be a very propitious time to come to Haidakhan to receive the blessings of Shri Babaji. A General Body Meeting of the Haidakhandi Samaj will take place during that time.

All the centres are in preparation to receive Mahamuniraji who will travel to the West in May and everyone is invited to participate in this important encounter.

In sending you all our best wishes from here, we want to stress the

importance and urgency of a deep sense of responsibility that needs to develop among us, so that the unity and love which Babaji taught us may become a living reality by which His will may be done. It is therefore vital that a discipline be established which grows from the heart, so that the Divine Energy, so strongly present now, may not be scattered.

To this end we appeal to all those who are ready to follow the path indicated by Babaji with faith and devotion in order to support and help those which have been charged with responsibility by Shri Babaji.

In this great work all centres around the world are united as one

family.

A few days before leaving His body, Babaji said to one of His Italian devotees : "Son, now the moment has come to keep the spine erect. For now is the time to go ahead. For your own good, for the good of the whole world, for the good of all it is necessary to keep the spine straight, for the time has come".

Let us therefore go ahead to meet our karma with Truth, Simplicity and Love with that faith that wells up from the depth of the heart.

A MESSAGE FROM MUNIRAJYou are all aware that Shri Mahaprabhuji left His human form on 14th

February, 1984. None of us could ever imagine that HE would do this so quickly. HE had been giving a number of indications for the last couple of years; but we were unable to understand this. It was, of course, HIS wish and nothing we could do about it.

All of us must remember that only HIS physical body is not here but as always, HE is with us all the time now and shall continue to be with us in the future also. HE has been directing our work in the past, is doing so at present, and will continue to do so in the future. It is the bound on duty of each one of us to follow the "PATH" shown by him, in an organised manner. Now and here is our time of "TEST".

Shri Bhagavan told us to live in International Brotherhood and to devote our lives to his favourite motto of "Truth, Simplicity and Love", and "Karma Yoga". This must now form the basis of our very existence.

We must endeavour to keep our "Family" together and differences must NOT crop up between foreign and Indian devotees. In fact, the old

- 4 -

differences, if any, which I know are not there, should be forgotten. I humbly appeal to all the foreign devotees, especially, to run all His programmes with renewed vigour and zeal, in the manner given to us by Shri Mahaprabhuji. You all must keep coming to Babaji's Ashrams in India as usual and should have no forebodings about anything. I assure you that there will be no difference in the "PAST", the "PRESENT" and in the "FUTURE". Indian devotees will also keep visiting various countries as here-to-for.

If we keep to the path of friendship and co-operation and continue to follow the directions and teachings of Shri Mahaprabhuji, I have no doubt that by total devotion to Him and His teachings, we will be able to have Him back, in "physical form" very very soon. I am available to you all for any service required of me at all times. THE SAMAJ is by and for you.

A NOTE FROM THE GENERAL SECRETARY

So a chapter has closed and a new one has begun. Pujya Babaji came like lightening into this world and left like lightening. The past fourteen years have gone off so fast that to all of us it was just like a dream. All of a sudden we have beome orphans and a sudden shock has come on us. Slowly we are becoming aware of the realities and getting adjusted to the new chapter .

I wish to share with all of your the precise happening of the event. On llth February, Pujya Babaji had a little cold and cough. On 12th February until afternoon Pujya Babaji was active and playful as usual. In the evening Pujya Babaji complained of little chest pain and took rest. He had his usual food in the night. Shri Ramesh Bhatt of Haldwani who had arrived in the evening attended to Babaji. On 13th February, Pujya Babaji had his normal routine and gave Darshan to all in the kirtan hall from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Then He again complained of chest pain. In the evening, Pujya Babaji had some hot soup. As the pain had continued, Babaji asked for a Sriyantra and kept it on his chest near the heart. With this Pujya Babaji felt lot of comfort. In the night as the pain did not reduce, a doctor was called from Haldwani. Dr Joshi arrived by truck in the night by 11.00 p.m. By mid-night he administered a morphine injection. Pujya Babaji had a comfortable sleep until 5.00 a.m. on 14th February. The doctor returned to Haldwani by 4.00 a.m. as he felt that Pujya Babaji was feeling comfortable and there was nothing to be anxious about. Pujya Babaji woke up, washed his face, and had a glass of hot milk and tried to sleep. He omitted twice and mouth was full of flem due to bad cold. By 9.00 a.m. He felt very uneasy and complained of severe chest pain. Shri Bhattji started massaging his chest to soothe him. By about 9.15 a.m. Pujya Babaji whispered slowly to Bhattji "Now I have to leave the body". Immediately afterwards Pujya Babaji tried to cough and collapsed. At that time Shri Muniraji and Poojari Gaura Hari were also in the room. Smt. Joshi Mathaji had run to the hospital to get some medicine for Pujya Babaji.

Nobody could imagine or believe that Pujya Babaji had left his body. They waited hoping that he would come back. Only in the afternoon the news was broken to all.

Upon our request the Governor deputed his top officials like the

Commissionaire, District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent Police to join us and take any inventory of the valuables and cash in the Ashram.

- 5 -

All this was done on 16th February and the cash was deposited in the Samajam's bank account at Haldwani. The valuables have been kept in a locker in the Bank under Samajam's name.

We are now slowly drawing to organise the running of all Ashrams of

Babaji in India. The design for a marble "Samadhi" structure is under progress. We will try our best to maintain the tradition and routine that Pujya Babaji had established in the various Ashrams. I request you all to assist us in this.

JAI MAHA MAYA KI JAI!SHRI BABAJI'S SANDESH

11 JANUARY 1984

At evening darshan, Shri Babaji invited Shammi Kapoor, Mahatmaji, to say something. Mahatmaji replied, "I have not come here to talk; I have come here to listen and learn." Shri Babaji looked around and then back at Mahatmaji and said, "All these people are yogis." So Mahatmaji began to speak:

Just sitting here, I will give one experience of mine.

The young, sweet boy who is now sitting in Baba's lap (Marco Reichel) was, two years ago, sitting in Baba's lap and Baba was always tossing .him. I was constantly watching and saw Baba turning him upside down sometimes and then rightside up, spinning him around. At that time, a great desire arose in me that I should be a child like him, so Baba can play with me.

The next day I was just sitting here when Baba came in. Baba beckoned to me with His hand - like this. I answered, "Ji, Prabhu", and went up to Him and was about to prostrate myself before Him, when He lifted me up and tossed me like a child and put me in His lap!

That's the truth. If you have a sincere wish for anything, Baba fulfills it.

The lap is the same, but now the child in it is you. The lap will be the same, but the child will always be changing. It is all the Grace of Shri Mahaprabhuji.

20 JANUARY 1984

The fact is, all of you have done very hard work here. You have made this place very happy and beautiful, and it is also prosperous. Due to that, thousands of people are coming here and getting peace of mind. This is all the result of your Karma Yoga.

In the near future, all of you will establish ashrams and centres

throughout the world and do Karma Yoga there and create the same vibrations wherever you go.

All of you must learn spiritual healing - Jhara-phunka - and make

spiritual healing centres. By that means, many people in the world will

- 6 -

get peace and happiness.

31 JANUARY 1984

You must all have a firm determination. Even if total destruction comes, or any great calamity comes, you must not be shaken from your determination. If there is a great flood, if fire breaks out - in any calamity - you must be so brave and determined that you would jump into fire or water. You must inspire others also to become brave and courageous. Only he who has courage is a true living being. One who has no courage is like a dead man, even though he lives. We have tightened our belts and taken a firm determination to do good to the world and uplift humanity. You must stick to this resolve with your full energy..

Calamities will fall not just on one country but on the whole universe; the whole universe is in danger. The terrible times which are approaching will engulf the whole world; the whole universe will be enveloped in this destruction. We must consider not only ourselves, but also the whole of the universe. We can achieve anything in this world when we are hard-working and industrious.

Because you must consider the whole universe, we should say "Jai

Vishwa!", instead of "Jai Hind!" "Jai Hind" means "Victory to India"; "Jai Vishwa!" means "Victory to the whole universe!"

1 FEBRUARY 1984

Shri Mahaprabhuji says Karma Yoga is the highest yoga. You are

witnessing the effect of Karma Yoga in everything you see here. It is the effect of your Karma Yoga that I am sitting here. (Shri Babaji was sitting on the edge of a new garden, recently built and planted.) This whole Company Bagh - Fakirabad - was built by your hands. Karma Yoga is the only thing in this world which can change your fortune/fate. And it can change the geography of the world: where there is water, you can make land; where there is earth, you can make water. In this Yuga/Era, there is a great necessity for Karma. You should never lag behind in your Karma Yoga; the times demand it. It is not I, but Time, which is talking through My mouth. Time is rolling on with great speed. All countries have raised their heads, with mouths open, like cobras, waiting for the opportunity to swallow each other. At this critical time, courage and bravery are needed. With your Karma Yoga, you must repeat the Name of God with your mouth.

I do not like dishonesty; I want everyone to be honest and dutiful.

Everyone must do his duty correctly. You must know what you should do and be busy doing it. By Karma one will not fall but will always rise higher. That is why you should never be afraid of doing hard work. We must do everything according to the need of the times. No work is low or bad in this world, if it is done in the right spirit. By Karma only can you advance. That is why a man should never hesitate to do any work. Whether it is high or low, big or small, no work is bad. Work is work.

Courage is life. One who has no courage is like a dead body. So My aim is to benefit the whole world - not just one individual, or one country.

JAI VISHWA!!!All of you must be always ready and make efforts for universal good.

You must help each other for that. You must always be prepared to do good acts, and wherever you live, you must organise weekly or monthly satsang (meetings for the Truth). Have large gatherings to discuss measures to be taken for the good of the whole world. Invite learned men and scientists; consult with them and take their advice. You must find ways and means to do universal good.

JAI MAHA MAYA KI JAI!JAI V1SHWA!

In the past, major holidays have been celebrated in the presence of Shri Mahaprabhuji. The Haidakhandi Samaj plans to organise these celebrations so that they will continue to be opportunities for large numbers of Shri Babaji's devotees to gather together. It is planned to celebrate the following holidays communally at the following places:

Makar SakrantiShivratriPrakatotsavParthiv Puja (August)Navratri (spring)GurupurnimaNavratri (fall)Christmasat Haidakhanat Manda Farm, near Vapi, Guj.at Vrindabanat Haidakhanat Haidakhanat Vrindabanat Chilliyanaulaat HaidakhanPrakatotsav will be celebrated in Vrindaban this year on 6 March. In the past year, Pujya Babaji has taken considerable pains to

reorganise, enliven, and direct the outgoing activity of the Haidakhandi Samaj. He similarly directed organisation and activity in the Western centres and ashrams. His instructions to the Samaj, in April 1983, were as follows:

"Today it is our task to go everywhere, from house to house, spreading righteousness, guiding everyone on the Path of Karma, giving them practical instructions, being ourselves examples. By Karma alone can we become prosperous. We have to work to our last breath."

In October, Shri Mahaprabhuji said:

"The thing which brings man down is "attachment" to his own kith and kin. When you all belong to this whole universe, where is the place for "I" and "mine"? We must unite as one universal family and march forward in unity. By this means only will the world be benefitted."

If we are to work Shri Babaji's will, we must continue to work together - unitedly, with love, living in harmony with His teachings - to spread His Message to all creatures in the universe. It is important that

— 7 —— 8 —

we work through the organisation that He created, support it and each other with our energies, our money, our prayers, and our thoughtful, supportive actions toward each other, and toward those whom Babjai has told us to help.

We can no longer lay our offerings at Shri Mahaprabhuji's Lotus Feet, but we can continue to make our offerings to support Shri Babaji's work in the manner which He has directed - that is, by supporting the Haidakhandi Samaj and the other organisations He has created for the propagation of His Message and for carrying out His work.

It costs lakes of rupees to maintain and operate the ashrams in India and to support and host the celebrations which are held in them. Shri Babaji has launched the ashrams in Haidakhan, Ambaji, and Vapi on ambitious programmes of service to the areas in which they are located. Many Western centres are just being created or enlarged. All of us are interested in new publications which help spread Shri Babaji's Message. All these things require money.

Please continue your financial support. Increase it, if you can. Baba's work is now ours to a far greater degree than before. Though there is not question that he will help us in our work in His Name, He has handed us the work on the physical plane. He has taught us what we need to know; now it is up to us to act.

JAI MAHA MAYA KI JAI!DEVOTEE'S EXPERIENCESTo explain in a few words what comes from contact with Mahavatar

Babaji is a very difficult task. The knowledge one acquires and the changes that occur in us are of such greatness and importance that it is difficult to put into words.

After I met the Great Guru, I changed radically. Every day I feel new energies inside myself. Babaji has given me the gift of healing the sufferings of people with my hands, and I can also sense the kind of thought the person to whom I am giving therapy is thinking -if they concern the past, the present, or the future. If the energy exchange betwen me and the patient is very strong, I can also know the thought content of that person.

I hope that what has happened to me after twenty years of atheism will be enough proof to help someone feel Babaji as The Divine Mind. For me, this is so. I also want to point out that before meeting Babaji I never had psychic experiences.

Om Namaha Shivaya.Ada Rizzi (Radha Luli)Via Giverchio, 3 20159Milano, ItalyThe following is reprinted from the September, 1983, edition of The

Conscious Connection.

- 9 -THE IMMORTAL BABAJI, A-Personal Encounter by Rev. Iris A. Moore.

My first conscious awareness of Babaji came in reading Autobiography of a Yogi. Some time later my curiosity was stimulated by Leonard Orr, the founder of Rebirthing. He told me a story of how Babaji had materialised in full body form twice to his friend Diane Hinterman. This incident led Leonard and Diane to go to India and find Babaji in Haidakhan.

Leonard had shared with me some pictures and articles about Haidakhan Baba. I meditated daily on Babaji's picture, asking, "Babaji, who are you really?" Finally, one day He appeared to me in an image no bigger than my hand, bowed to me, and the message was, "I am the God in you." In further meditation I asked, "Guru or God or both?" One day I heard Him say, "Many a guru is here playing God. Why is it so difficult for you to believe that God is here playing guru?".

My heart gradually began to win over my mind as I chanted, sang and

thought the mantra Babaji states can purify the mind, "Om Namaha Shivaya". As my heart center opened, I felt more love and happiness within and I began to wonder what I might gain from actually experiencing this "God in the flesh".

Once my commitment was solid, the means to go to India - the money, time, everything - fell into place. I had already written and received permission to come to Haidakahan any time and to stay as long as I wished. On October 9, 1982, I arrived in Delhi, a bit disappointed that my prayers for a travel companion had not been answered. Later, I realised that purpose was to teach me that I was never alone.

As I travelled by bus from New Delhi to Haldwani, there was always

someone to help me with everything I needed. In Haldwani I met four others who would be travelling with me the rest of the way. It seemed obvious that Babaji had arranged travel plans for everyone. I was grateful and amazed at the details and divine timing.

The most amazing part of the journey to Haidakhan was the walk up the holy Gautami Ganga. To get to the Ashram at the foothills of the Himalayas, we had to cross the river several times, and each time I felt my body and energy more purified. Inside me there was almost a compulsion to surrender to the river - a perfect reflection of my deep desire to surrender to all that is Holy within myself.

After climbing the 108 steps up to the ashram, we were told that Babaji would receive us in His inner court. He was more beautiful than any picture could capture. His essence is beyond description.

Sometime later, the porters arrived with our luggage and I was able to give Babaji the gift I had brought. As I knelt at His feet, He opened my heart center and let me feel His delight, bliss and love in my heart. Together, we giggled like children for an instant. That was when I realised I had come "Home".

After the first day with Babaji, when He opened my heart center, I

wondered what else there could possibly be. I learned during my visit that there is no end to His great love, no place His grace, mercy and compassion cannot penetrate, once one surrenders to the God within. Every time I was with Babaji, I would send telepathic messages of love and gratitude and ask Him to dissolve some illusions of my past. He would always respond, usually immediately, demonstrating that He knew my thoughts.

- 10 -

For example, during aarati I longed to experience the words, "This is full, that is full, from fullness fullness comes. Take away fullness from fullness and fullness remains." Later, during darshan time with Babaji, a suitcase that appeared to be empty was brought to Babaji. He took out several items of clothing and gave them to the devotees who needed them. It seemed impossible that so much came from so little space. When the suitcase was taken away, it appeared bulging with fullness. I recalled my morning wish. Further amazement came later. When I packed to leave, I saw that, in order to make room for items I had bought in the ashram, I had parted with exactly the same items of clothing that Babaji had pulled out of the suitcase.

Another example involved the issue of death. On October 13, the

anniversary of my mother's death, Babaji was to leave the ashram to travel in India. In my heart I asked Him to help me resolve any illusions I still had about her death. When He appeared just before leaving the ashram, He was wearing green (my colour), and I knew this was significant for me. He started toward the temple, but turned back to the outer court and sat on a bench in the exact place where I had been sitting. He looked at me and sent me a telepathic message: "I am your only Mother and Father. Today I go on a journey, but I will never leave you." My heart filled with joy, and as I watched Him ride His white horse across the rocks along the river, I was like an excited child delighting in His majesty, beauty and love. He healed the illusion of death/separation. There was no sadness.

After his return, I had an occasion for the release of sadness. I had asked Him a question and He yelled loudly, "No question!" Knowing He sometimes did this to help a devotee heal anger, I stayed to make sure His love was still there, and I prayed in my heart for help. Soon I realised He had merely reflected my mother's anger and reaction when she would tire of my many questions. This went very deep, and I could not hold back the tears. Babaji sent some cucumber to me that He had blessed. Such a gesture of love only increased my feelings and I left the garden to release the rising storm I felt. The Holy Spirit began to breathe me (spontaneous breathing). My cries were those of a small child. A female devotee was sent to comfort me, as well.

Later that evening I was still feeling sad. My thoughts were, "This is stupid to sit here in Babaji's presence and feel sad. Why do I still cling to it? Please take it from me, Babaji." He got up and walked down one aisle, then the next. As He passed me the second time, He lifted His shawl and brushed it over my head, taking the sadness with Him.
